Changing You Car's Timing Belt

A timing belt is a rubber belt that provides a quiet and flexible connection between the camshaft and the crankshaft. In time, it can wear and needs to be replaced. The common sign that indicates that you have a timing belt problem is when your motor suddenly stops and won't restart anymore. Well, broke timing belt is not the sole reason for replacing it. As experts put it, a car's timing belt must be changed after 60,000 miles. By doing so, you will prevent the possible negative effects of a defective timing belt in your car such as bad engine performance and engine failure.

Changing your car's timing belt is not an easy job. It requires time and preparation. For better results, it is recommended to read your car owner's manual for the right belt to use. Bear in mind that cars have different designs of timing belt. Here are some steps that can help you in changing your car timing belt:

1. Cool off the engine before removing the belt. You also have to remove all obstructions to the timing belt cover.

2. Disconnect the battery cable, the distributor cap, and the air intake assembly. Using a large wrench on the crankshaft bolt, rotate the engine until the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley is on the the 0° mark on the timing scale, which is usually molded into the engine block.

3. Remove the timing belt cover bolts and pull the cover off. Check all the timing marks, make sure all of them are properly aligned. Afterwards, loosen the timing belt tensioner and remove the timing belt. Do not allow either the camshaft or crankshaft to move while the belt is off.

4. Place the new car timing belt. Slide the new timing belt into position then loose the bolts. Hold the timing belt tensioner and contact it to the belt.

5. Adjust the timing belt to the correct tension. To know the correct tension, follow the procedures on your manual.

6. Reinstall the timing covers, tighten bolts and other components that you removed.
