Types of Dashboard Gauges

Gauges in your car have different units and purposes. One of the main functions of a car cauge is to inform the driver about the status of some of the components of the car. Gauges can usually be seen in the dashboard, near the driver. A guage looks like a clock. Some are analog, while others are digital. It also has different designs and sizes. Among the most common types of dashboard gauges are speedometer, fuel gauge, temperature guage and tachometer.

Speedometer. From the word "speed," speedometer measures how fast your car is moving. The accuracy of the speedometer can be affected by the size of the tires. If the wheel or tire size is changed, this will result in an inaccurate reading. Some say that this is the most used gauge in your dashboard. The speedometer uses an electronic sensor to measure wheel speed and send the signal to an electronically to the guage.

Fuel Gauge. It measures the level of fuel contained in a tank. In order to operate, a fuel guage consists of two part: the sender and the indicator. The sender is floating inside the tank connected to an electrical device called the resistor, which sends the level of the fuel to the indicator. The indicator unit is the guage itself that has a needle that points to ā€œFā€ when the fuel is full and ā€œEā€ when it's empty and also in between.

Temperature Gauge. This gauge measures the temperature of the engine coolant in degrees. Car engines require certain amount of heat for best performance. Usually, the temperature guage doesn't have the exact number of temperature, instead they only show Cold and Hot mark levels.

Tachometer. If the speedometer measures the rotation of the wheel, the tachometer measures the rotation speed of your engine. This device usually displays the revolutions per minute (RPM) and can either be analog or digital. Monitoring the engine speed can help the driver select the most appropriate gear for the road conditions. Tachometer also varies depending on the size and speed of the engine.
