Recommended Websites Charging A Car Battery Similar to other batteries, a car battery gets drained. It can happen to anyone, in any place and in most inconvenient times. To prevent that from happening, your battery should always be kept fully charged. Here are the different ways of charging a car battery: Using Your Car. Normally the car battery is charged by your alternator. However, if the car is not running, your alternator cannot charge your battery. Every car has an alternator that produces electricity whenever the car is running because a belt connects a pulley on the alternator to a pulley on the flywheel. Jumper Cables. When someone gets their battery drained on the road, they usually jump start it using jumper cables. You need to find a second vehicle with a charged battery in order to perform this. Attach jumper cables from the other car's battery to your car battery. You'll just have to know how attach to cable properly, check your car owner's manual for instruction. The process usually takes a few minutes, you don't have to fully charge it. All you need is enough electricity to start the car. Battery Charger. A battery charger must be plugged into a standard electrical outlet. An 110 volt household outlet can charge your car battery even if it's not connected to your car. However, it's better to remove the battery from the car for safety reasons. When charing your battery, you just have to connect the charger's cables to your car's battery terminals. Then, try to start your car. Similar tojump starting, you can do a quick charge and leave the rest to your alternator. Before charging your car battery, follow some safety precautions. Use a pair of gloves and eye protector. A car battery has toxic elements that are highly flammable and explosive that can damage your skin or eyes. Remember to stay away from it while it is charging. It is also important not to overcharge the battery. Overcharging your battery can shorten its life span. Automotive
